It’s amazing to me how the media capitalizes on stories like the recent one on the Canadian politician who referred to a current political issue as “sexy”. They will now point fingers at this particular politician in order to expose their shallow character, capitalizing on the “sexiness” of this issue to advance their own personal agendas. And now I’m using this “sexy” issue to do the same, capitalizing on a tantalizing morsel of today’s shallow society to expose it’s superficiality while using the same superficial method.

It seems to me there is a measure of hypocrisy in everyone. If at all in life we have judged our world and its people to be unfair, if we have looked on at other cultures judging them to be backwards (or maybe passing that judgement onto our own), if we have envied someone else thinking them to be undeserving of their fortune or rejoiced at their deserved misfortune, we are a hypocrite.

We are a hypocrite because in passing judgement, either good or bad, we are saying that indeed there is a measure that exists; a standard for all people that is impartial, against which every individual is weighed. If at all we felt that someone is intolerant, likewise if we have been intolerant, we have confirmed our belief in this universal standard. If this were not the case, we would have no reason and no authority to make these assessments in our hearts.

Our problem however, is a result of our confirmed belief; for at whatever point we have judged something, we have stated that we too are subject to that impartial measure. And at that point we are guilty.

If humanity shares something in common, most certainly it is this; we are hypocrites.
